Paris: Ann Demeulemeester has built her cult following by giving her customers variations on a dark, minimalist theme. It is to her credit as a designer that she still manages to evolve that aesthetic to not only satisfy her loyal patrons, but also attract new fans. For Fall 2011, Demeulemeester presented her share of edgy black separates (they were almost insurmountably intimidating this season) including tough-girl motorcycle jackets with corseted strips of leather hanging menacingly off the hems, but colored furs and touches of ruffles added a soft edge and wearability to the sometimes harsh pieces. It was a delicate balancing act and even somewhat unexpected, but that is exactly what keeps Demeulemeester relevant and in the top ranks of fashion.
