Previously the headquarters of newspaper De Volkskrant, the new Volkshotel is based in East Amsterdam near the lively De Pijp district, taking over what was a dilapidated looking building. Redesigned and smartened up by Urban Resort Foundation alongside architect Steven Steenbrugger and interiors studio Muller van Tol, the building now houses 172 rooms, a restaurant, a workspace area and a speakeasy bar in the basement. Nine of the rooms have received bespoke design from individual local artists and creatives, while references to the newspaper still exist and can be seen dotted around the hotel. Room sizes and prices vary; opt for the standard if you’re after comfort with a little space, though if it’s little more than a bed for the night the modestly proportioned Miss Petite may suit you just fine.
If you fancy a bite of food with breathtaking views of the city, head up to Canvas Restaurant on the seventh floor. If late night dancing and debauchery is more your style, basement bar Doka boasts some of the best DJ sets in town alongside weekly events. -Emily Cater
