When it comes to denim, Amsterdam is the place to be. It’s the birthplace of denim innovators like G-Star RAW and Scotch & Soda and the European hub of internationally established brands like Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, and it recently launched the first ever Denim City Headquarters. It takes one look at the streets of Amsterdam to know: these people sure love their denim.

Next week (26-27 October) the denim industry will descend upon Amsterdam for a week long celebration of everything blue with the seasonal Kingpins show fabric show, the Global Denim Awards alongside an extensive schedule of denim events/parties throughout the stores in and around the city.

about-us

In preparation for the denim showdown, we spoke to Joost and Elza, the cool couple behind Dutch accessories brand Atelier De L’Armee to get the scoop on the best places to see, visit and of course drink coffee at while in the city.

WGSN: What do you love most about living in Amsterdam?

AL: Amsterdam is a like a small cozy town, everything is reachable by bike. Its citizens are very open minded, you can do or wear whatever you like, they let you be.

WGSN: Which area in Amsterdam do you draw most inspiration for your collections from?

AL: We take inspiration in Amsterdam with all the vintage shops (like Episode, Kiloshop to name a few) at and around the Waterloop plein. One of our other favourite shops is Tenue de Nîmes, they have a great selection of brands!!

Meneer Nieches

WGSN: Where do you go for a great night out?

AL: When we have time to go out, we would first go for a Pizza at a place called Pazzi and then get some drinks at Meneer Nieches to end up at the Paradiso, cause it has be best accoustic and atmosphere in town.
