Newcomer Joseph Altuzarra caused quite a stir with his debut collection last season, and all eyes were focused on him, anxious to see if he could live up to the buzz. His sophomore effort was a successful mash-up of texture, piecing and integrating materials as diverse as suede and swiss dot. Woven strips of leather decorated many pieces, suggesting a cane-backed chair while giving a bit of a western feel. The Givenchy alumnus created wearable separates — among his best were a filmy white textured top with a plunging neckline, worn with an asymmetric ruffled skirt. A suede jacket, paired with matching tapered pants, was brightened by a white ruffle at the hem. While the message seemed repetitive toward the end of the show, Altuzarra’s unique direction was important, and he looks to be part of a new generation of influential New York designers.
