Paris: With concha belts, Native American-inspired jewelry, floor-sweeping broomstick skirts and plenty of gingham, Alexis Mabille seemed to conjure an idealized interpretation of the American West. But with his affinity for romantic details and femininity, the looks took on a very French sense of delicateness. Bits of lace were attached to collars and sleeves, and three-dimensional flower appliqués decorated sweet dresses. Tailored pieces were spot-on, but slouchy graphic sweatshirts and tees challenged their precision. Though the clashes of American and French, casual and buttoned-up didn’t always work, it was a step away from the overly precious collections Mabille has presented in the past, and that was a favorable development. –Joanna Manganaro
