Alexander Wang took the manly all-American sport, football, and made it feminine for S/S10. On his roster of athletic-inspired looks was this season’s favorite heather-grey jersey. Used for molded tops that were worn under corsets and pieced with cotton twill for baggy chinos, sweats never looked so good. Straight from the locker room, varsity-letter jackets emblazoned with a sequined “A” and an exposed zipper were matched to sheer band-bottomed warm-up pants. Players’ “tightie whities” were transformed into a form-fitting long-sleeved dress, and linebacker shoulder pads gave a strong silhouette to a glittery astro-turf-fur cropped sweater. Wang used the sport’s protective gear as inspiration for accessories: cleat covers became footless and backless knee-highs, sneaker laces were used for sky-high sandals and deflated footballs became the perfect daytime clutch.
