New York: It seems no fashion aficionado can keep from opining about the controversial appointment of Alexander Wang as creative director of Balenciaga. Critics suggested that he may steer the label in a more “commercial” direction. Oh, the dreaded word, commercial. While some may not consider him one of fashion’s avant garde, Wang certainly knows how to create items that sell. His current Pre-Fall collection was proof. Slick black leather details gave trim coats, layered jackets, and simple dresses an edge, while gathering and asymmetrical draping added a softer counterpoint. Wang also reprised to the sporty pieces that have served him so well in seasons past. Elastic-waist cropped pants, raglan tees, and slouchy sweatshirts still looked current and desirable. They speak to the contemporary market loud and clear. The question is whether Wang can translate his message for a higher-end clientele. Fashion followers will be waiting with baited breath for the answer during the Fall collections.–Joanna Manganaro
