New York: Downtown darling Alexander Wang shook off the leather-bound heaviness of his F/W 12 collection in favor a lighter offering, though not one lacking in the edgy/cool style that has become his signature. Leather was still present in this collection, but it was used more sparingly, often pieced with other materials. Wang came up with creative ways to show skin – strategically placing opaque panels on a sheer dress, adding overlapping straps and cutouts to the backs of tops and dresses. The effect was sexy, but not overtly so. The tapered cropped pants and wide-leg long shorts he has shown in the past made a comeback, and the puffers of last season now appeared with sleeves slashed off and made from translucent nylon, making the down inside visible. Chunky yarns knit with large needles made for sweaters that felt at once substantial and lightweight. There was plenty for Wang’s cool-kid followers to latch onto, and one can expect they will be clamoring for these pieces when they hit the stores. –Joanna Manganaro
