Paris: For both her Men’s show and her Pre-Fall presentation for Alexander McQueen, Sarah Burton was inspired by military costumes. In fact, a red greatcoat with black fur cuffs and collar appeared in both collections. Though military may seem like a tired theme, Burton brought a fresh perspective, using the traditional details in unexpected ways; brass buttons swooped across an asymmetrical dress in a half circle and decorated the shoulder panel of a graphic black and white button-up shirt. Precise skirt- and pantsuits showed off Burton’s expert tailoring, while inventive details – a bodice partially encrusted with gold beads – and a striking black and white Rorschach print conjured the whimsy of Mr. McQueen. With her appealing collection of wearable yet intriguing pieces, Burton demonstrated that the military trend is far from over.
