THE SEVERE HOURGLASS
Paris: Sarah Burton’s work at Alexander McQueen continues to honor and reference her predecessor, though unique details and styling emerge every season. For Pre-Fall she brought over several of the equestrian references seen in the McQ collection, such as harness belts and elongated riding jackets, but also produced a stunning series of gowns tailored to accentuate the body with a severely feminine shape. Fit and flare strapless dresses in ruby and forest green emblazoned with floral velvet flocking were regal, even when layered over matching trousers. More unusual for Burton was a velvet jumpsuit capped off by a mink stole, a sleek look and a welcome contrast to the many a-line silhouettes. —Nina Stotler
