Not that it’s an overwhelming surprise, but Valentino announced his retirement from the fashion world today, after months of speculation and on the heels of his three-day anniversary bash. The seventy-five year old Italian plans to stage his final RTW show in Paris this October and his final couture show in January. I’m sure both will be star-studded extravaganzas because c’mon: this is the man who has dressed everyone from Jackie Kennedy to Princess Diana to Oprah. When celebs need a simple, elegant, beautifully cut gown for a red carpet event, Valentino has been the man to turn to for over forty years. And so, with Stylesight.com’s help I’ve put together a basic Valentino primer using his FW07 and couture collections.
You wouldn’t think red would be an easy color to co-opt, but Valentino managed to do it. The designers trademark shade is said to be comprised of 100% magenta, 100% yellow and 10% black, which makes for a whopping 210% redness. Although Valentino is known for his use of red, I’m in love with the idea of his 1968 all-white collection, which went against the brightly colored fashions of the time and marked the debut of his “V’ logo.
