Addio, Valentino

valention

Not that it’s an overwhelming surprise, but Valentino announced his retirement from the fashion world today, after months of speculation and on the heels of his three-day anniversary bash. The seventy-five year old Italian plans to stage his final RTW show in Paris this October and his final couture show in January. I’m sure both will be star-studded extravaganzas because c’mon: this is the man who has dressed everyone from Jackie Kennedy to Princess Diana to Oprah. When celebs need a simple, elegant, beautifully cut gown for a red carpet event, Valentino has been the man to turn to for over forty years. And so, with Stylesight.com’s help I’ve put together a basic Valentino primer using his FW07 and couture collections.

You wouldn’t think red would be an easy color to co-opt, but Valentino managed to do it. The designers trademark shade is said to be comprised of 100% magenta, 100% yellow and 10% black, which makes for a whopping 210% redness. Although Valentino is known for his use of red, I’m in love with the idea of his 1968 all-white collection, which went against the brightly colored fashions of the time and marked the debut of his “V’ logo.

Valentino’s strength lies not in innovation for innovation’s sake, but in the classics of a woman’s wardrobe. His gowns, impeccably cut and always reeking of glamour, are the designer’s bread and butter.

A couture mainstay for years, Valentino’s love of opulent materials and beadwork is even more impressive up close.

These are just fabulous! He is a master at any age! Everything else on this page pales in his presence. (Sorry, Mila.) Valentino deserves a page of his own. You had a difficult job chosing which to post. Well done stylesight.
