A youthful and modern take on the Seventies at Bottega Veneta

Milan: Thomas Maier presented his Autumn/Winter collection for Bottega Veneta today and it was no less a lineup of Seventies silhouettes but with the added contemporary functionality that he has brought to the house. Backstage, he explained the approach to this youthful collection – “This is not about meticulous dressing, but taking a bit of a bolder approach when it comes to pattern and colour.” It was full of pattern, and not just the overt head-to-toe polka dots rendered in lively colours of teal, green, russet, and violet but also a bold graphic that looked striking in the zippered cape and coat. The silhouettes were reminiscent of the early seventies – long flared trousers, silk blouses worn under tank tops knitted in lurex – continuing the trend on sparkle. Lace sheaths were layered over colour and decorated with diamante necklaces. Tunic and coatdresses with exaggerated shoulders were worn over pants while the same detail continued in to the feminine and tailored menswear. – Lizzy Bowring
