French fashion label A.P.C. unveiled its first stretch denim collection yesterday (Feb 17) with a small line of unisex pants made in Lycra spandex and cotton.
As many devoted A.P.C. fans will know, Jean Touitou won’t accept anything other than the finest raw denims for his highly sought after jeans. While their denims offer the best fades, their slim fits and particularly unforgiving unwashed fabrics make it tough, not just for the bigger (than average) guy or gal, but for anybody who wants to break a pair in. But this week, that has all changed. It was announced that after more than twenty-five years, A.P.C. will be introducing stretch denim for men and women. The ‘Petit New Standard’ fits will be offered in black, stone wash and a dark indigo shade that mimics raw denim in appearance and ageing.
“I felt the time was right to be more comfortable,” said founder Jean Touitou. “Sometimes people don’t want change, but it worked for Bob Dylan when he turned to the electric guitar. Raw denim still works, even after 27 years. It just made sense to offer something more comfortable for feminine styles.”
When asked if the jeans are similar to “jeggings” — a combination of leggings and jeans — Touitou replied: “Ce n’est pas possible. That would be a crime against humanity. It’s 2 percent Lycra.”
The jeans are available on A.P.C. online now with prices retailing between $195 to $210.
