With underwear invading the ready-to-wear runways, A.F. Vandevorst had the perfect starring vehicle for their growing line of intimates. The duo has always incorporated lingerie-inspired pieces into their sportswear collection, but this season unmentionables took center stage. The designers seemed to imagine a woman stranded in the desert, with nothing in her possession but a truck full of undergarments — sheer slips, nude briefs and nylon stockings. Even trench coats, blouses and trousers were cut from diaphanous fabrics in colors that reflected an arid environment. The garments were hastily tucked into and stacked on top of one another in various states of disarray, each transparent layer playing with the one beneath. Angular tops that were shaped by rivets, wide leather belts, and deconstructed corsets with metallic leaf appliqués gave structure to all the airy layers. Dusty shades of sand, khaki, rust and bronze eventually transitioned into a cool blend of moody blues, with pieces of silk-wool suiting mixing in with the underpinnings, providing some much-needed relief from the sandstorm of iridescent chiffon.
