A.F. Vandevorst: A Big Concept in a Small Store

An Vandevorst and Filip Arickx are at it again. Inspired by their former AKTION guerilla pop-up shops comes The Smallest Traveling Store in the World. After debuting in the Netherlands and showing in London, the Belgian design duo brings the project to U.S. Flashback to their 90’s collection that was inspired by military nurse uniforms and then shown on models lying in hospital beds; TSTSITW is designed to give people a glimpse into the philosophy of the brand and its connection to hospitals and medical symbols. Located in the TriBeCa boutique, Patron of the New, is an interactive recreation of a hospital room.  An old Red Cross hospital bed that Arickx’s father gave him when he was young offers up a sitting area for shoe shoppers and is connected to other pieces of hospital furniture that also serve a function; a white draped screen doubles as a fitting room and a bedside hospital monitor loops the runway show for those in need of inspiration. A dentists’ lamp, cabinet on wheels and rack of A.F.Vandecorst current collection are also connected to the bed, further demonstrating the brands relationship to hospital beds. – Jordana Longo
