A.F. Vandevorst

Paris: A.F. Vandevorst (Belgian husband-wife team An Vandevorst and Filip Arickxis) is one of those labels that adheres to an urban warrior aesthetic – a mix of structured armor-like pieces and draped cocooning layers, with a subtle lingerie-inspired sensuality at its core. This spring, the futuristic fembots went high-glam with gilded surfaces and red carpet-worthy gowns. Metallics were the order of the day, coming in the form of metal plates arranged in a herringbone pattern, pavé sequins, metal mesh and high-gloss laminates; a silk charmeuse, used on both the right and wrong sides, offered a subtler shine. The designers kept the blinged-out wares from looking too over-the-top by rendering them in edgy tarnished shades and balancing them out with rustic crocheted pieces and painted canvas suits. In the end, the cocktail dresses and evening gowns stole the show, draped and tucked into ultra-fluid layers that only emphasized the richness of the materials. Not too aggressive or too dark, but with just the right amount of edginess, luxury and even romanticism, this was one of the duo’s strongest collections to date.
