New York City
“A Fantasy of reality”, Miuccia Prada alluded to her recent resort collection, which was held, incidentally, at her Herzog and de Meuron–designed headquarters in New York. A chic, minimalist approach and in every sense, a commercial offering of comfortable, easy-to-wear clothes.
Although Miuccia Prada presented a combination of her early 90s collections, there was a distinct 60s vibe throughout, where she mixed of-the-moment pieces with futuristic components.
Here, attention was drawn to a slim low-slung waists, exaggerated by wide tailored self-belts, and nonchalantly worn with languid trousers, long lean skirts and side wrap micro-mini skirts, edged in the simplest form of a ruffle. Athletic tops came in leather combined with cable-knit yokes and colour-blocked polo shirts featuring the same ruffle trim. Adding some frivolity to the minimalist mood of the collection, graphic prints and sparkling brocades were meticulously cut in neat cropped jackets and tailored pieces while versatile leather coats were cleverly styled in a delightful and thoroughly refreshing line-up.
Prada’s latest offering suggests our catwalk predictions for A/W 18/19 still resonate within Pre Spring/Summer, in line with our most sports-focused trends. Here, the WGSN Catwalks team highlight the key trends to takeaway.
The Low Waist
Moving away from the waist focus trend of SS18 , this dropped waist shape was one of the defining features of Prada’s resort collection. Whilst they don’t emphasise a nipped-in silhouette, they do draw attention to the hips and the result is still a narrow, form-fitting shape.
For a Pre Spring/Summer take, the ruffle trim is key, and is set to provide a simple trim across several categories. Expect to see on placquets, sleeves, skirts and hemlines.
An update on print and pattern clashing, Prada’s take on graphics was harmonious and coordinated, suggesting a minimalist, softer take on a more maximalist trend.
In these co-ord pieces, jackets are shorter to show the low waist pant, as mentioned above.
Combine a shorter two piece with coloured tights for an aesthetic fit for SS19. As seen in last week’s Chanel’s Pre Spring/Summer 2019 collection, colour block tights are featuring on the runways – and Prada followed suit, featuring printed tights.
