Located right on Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park, the New California Barbershop is a handsomely laid-back spot where gents can snag a haircut and a hot shave for a super-reasonable price. After years of touring in bands, Brian Girgus was ready for a change. Known in his circle of friends for giving amazing haircuts, he decided to enroll in barber school, and would have had to take out a loan to do so if it weren’t for a meant-to-be moment. While shopping for coats at a thrift store, he found $6,000 cash in a pocket, exactly the cost of tuition. After graduating, Girgus worked at various barbershops around San Francisco before scoring a job at the well-known Freemans Sporting Club. Now he’s back on his home turf here in Los Angeles with adorable shop dog Shelly Long by his side, and business is booming. In addition to cuts and shaves, the New California Barbershop features a small general store in the back, stocked with vintage treasures, Malin + Goetz hair and skincare products, and even coffee beans from Cheap Trick’s Bun E.
