Every beauty guru knows the importance of the red lip. Always classic, the shade stands apart from all other hues. It’s not a must-try; it’s an essential. In fact, the only difficulty with the vibrant pout is finding one that works on your skin tone. Fear not, because Periel Aschenbrand (founder of House of Exposure, a curated online boutique for art, fashion, beauty and “other curiosities”) and Jenny Shimizu (legendary model) teamed up with the ultimate lipstick queen, Poppy King, to create the Helmut Red lipstick, their take on the timeless kiss that looks chic on all skin tones.
Tuesday night, House of Exposure introduced the Helmut Red lipstick, their first limited edition product, at the Openhouse gallery in Nolita. The lipstick was “inspired by the photography of Helmut Newton… an ode to the power of red lipstick.” Moisture packed and lightweight, Helmut Red shines with a full red luster. Bonus: it’s made with a blue-ish base designed to flatter all skin tones. Shimizu models an oversized lipstick in the buff in photos by famed photographer Mark Seliger. “I’m not so into the way beauty products are marketed and how women are presented,” said Aschenbrand. “To me, Jenny was the obvious choice to be a new sort of ‘beauty queen.’ She’s my muse, though she’ll probably punch me for saying that.”
Helmut Red is packaged in a vintage Kodak inspired box and closes with a magnetic cap. It looks like there might be such a thing as the perfect red lipstick after all.
