Want to be ahead of the trends, key items, looks and details that will be popular this Spring/Summer 2017 across US and UK retailers? WGSN’s Denim Team has got you covered.
In this addition of our “Denim Sneak-Peak” we take you through 6 key trends that will leave you anticipating those warm-weather denim retail deliveries.
Feminine workwear- workwear inspired looks emerge for the season mixing traditional workwear styles such as mechanic suits, carpenter pants and utility coveralls with a commercial flair. Design details are kept minimal across premium brands. Juniors brands offer flirty appeal with strapped miniskirt versions as seen here by Guess Jeans Brand.
Hem Focus- Decorative techniques move down to leg openings and hemlines on jeans, bringing newfound attention to hems. Stepped-hems, festive embroidery and dip-dyeing are all important. Random eyelet hardware detail is also key as seen here by Michael Kors.
Controlled Frayed Edges- Raw, frayed-edge detail continue to make an impact on denim assortments and this season techniques are refreshed through more controlled versions. Frayed edges are presented in cleaner, shorter and more structured versions as opposed to the longer-length and messy fraying in past seasons. UK-based brand Whistles incorporates controlled frayed edges on leg-openings and waistbands.
Double Denim Looks- Double-denim styling looks have proven themselves to be a commercial success for both US and UK retailers season after season, and for S/S 17 newness comes through in matching solid pale-blue tones, lending a minimalistic premium appeal to looks as seen here by GAP.
Extreme Laundry- Channelling laundry techniques from the women’s sector, extreme laundry emerges at the younger end of the market for the season. Tie-dye, extreme bleach-spatter and 1980s acid-washes are all important on key denim assortments while also complementing summer festival looks. Black-and-white combinations are offered at UK-based retailer River Island.
Surface Decor- The past few seasons have witnessed increased interest in surface decoration on men’s denim assortments. Embroidered designs, patches and badges are all used to decorate key items. Hand-painting taps into the DIY trend as seen here by Guess Jeans brand.
