Renowned nail artist Jin Soon Choi tells Stylesight about her nail inspirations for SS14.
She’s a big New York City name in nails. Who is she? She’s Jin Soon Choi: a nail artist to the stars and backstage at New York fashion week (we loved her wiped-off look at Tess Giberson). Nails of all shapes and lengths are trending at the moment, there has never been a more popular time to be well-manicured. The nail artist extraordinaire tells about her inspirations for the SS14 season, what colors and artists are inspiring her at the moment and what it takes to make it in the competitive and glamorous world of manicures and pedicures.
Stylesight: Music, fabrics, art, icons: which of these are inspiring you for the S/S 14 season?
Jin Soon Choi: “Music: Bossa Nova because of how it fuses samba and jazz; it just seems spring-like to me. Fabrics: lace for its inherent floral geometry. Art: Kandinsky for his pure, abstract art which I think has conceptual applications to nail art.”
SS: Your motto that has set you on a path to success?
JSC: “Love what you do and never stop improving on it.”
SS: What is the secret to succeeding in the beauty business? Is there one?
JSC: “Become an expert. Whatever you do, aim to be the very best at it.”
SS: Good luck charm (item, person or pet)?
JSC: “My husband is my good luck charm, of course!”
SS: Best beauty idea you’ve ever had? Explain.
JSC: “The best beauty idea is to moisturize. If you regularly moisturize your skin, face, hands, and cuticles you will prolong your youthful appearance. You should also moisturize internally by drinking a lot of water. I do this especially during fashion week.”
SS: What is one thing that helps give you an inspirational pick-me-up?
JSC: Taking the time to be inspired by art around me. I always try to make time to go to a museum to see a new exhibit.”
SS: First experience with beauty? Tell us about a moment or memory.
JSC: “When I was growing up in Korea, all of the girls in my village would get together and paint their nails with ground up balsam flower pedals. The color actually lasted a long time!”
SS: Beauty product (skincare or makeup) you’d never live or leave the house without?
JSC: “I love SK-II face cream. It’s always in my personal beauty kit.”
SS: Name the beauty campaign or editorial spread (old or new) that’s inspired you the most?
JSC: “I have been inspired by this Irving Penn image for its simple clarity and subtle imagery.”
