Trade show season is in full swing, and the month of January flew by as the WGSN Lifestyle & Interiors team scattered across Europe to cover the shows that will lead trends for 2017. As our eyes are still fresh and brimming with everything we have seen, here’s a distilled hotlist of the key trends highlighted across the S/S 17 collections – complementing the ever-green and ever-growing importance of honest and nature-connected materials and products.

First of all, Darks are In – even (especially?) for summer.

Dark colourways are here to stay: we have been tracking them across the recent seasons. We are seeing a growing trend for interiors embracing nocturnal shades, across hospitality, retail and residential alike – which syncs up with our WGSN trend prediction called Nocturne ahead for A/W 17/18. Interestingly, this direction is finding its way amidst Nordic and Nordic-inspired brands, that work tinted darks into highly sophisticated compositions and matte yet soft tactilities, taking over the space, from walls to accessories.

More jewellery-inspired tones are highly present as well, with deep sapphire blues, ruby reds, amethyst purples and emerald greens embellishing hard and soft goods. Greenery patterns also embrace darker palettes, with forest green working alongside warmer tones for lush, floor-to-ceiling designs.

Secondly, there is a surreal, magical direction emerging. This theme is linked to the multitude of fantasy-themed entertainment due to come live in the upcoming months (and years). In times of turmoil and uncertainty these fantastical installations and products are ideal to immerse one’s self into, offering respite from visual and social media noise, and often bringing up a smile. This direction can go poetic, delicate and almost ethereal, revolving on transparency, quietude and lightness – a floating cloud for a light, trays and furniture that look chiselled in ice, or transparent glass cookware to use directly on the stove (yes, please! #wishlist).

And it can go more flamboyant, more dramatic: bring in circus elements to interiors, dress up the home with masks, and busts, and magical wands, and crystal balls; dress mirrors with silky tassels or look into mysterious, antique-looking surfaces. And to defeat your fear of mice and have your Cinderella moment? A side lamp carried by a tiny mouse is the key.

Lastly, hottest tip fresh from the latest shows: you all are wondering what’s next for tropical, and where to bring it in S/S 17? Look no further, and start populating your tropical patterns with exotic animals. The jungle is alive with giraffes, elephants, tigers and a fluttering of multicolour birds – toucans and parrots are the new flamingoes. On dark backgrounds, of course.

PS. And the new palm? The cactus – start gathering cacti of all sizes, from totemic to ornate, from lighting to decor and bedding. And they make for awesome and instagrammable alternative Christmas trees, as well.
