New York: Phillip Lim offered fluidity and movement in a collection moored in the basics of American sportswear (if not activewear). Contrasting raglan sleeves recalled the classic American baseball tee; extra-wide tuxedo stripes gave the illusion of refined track pants; easy jersey dresses were no-fuss sophistication. Appropriately, Lim looked to the streets for his inspiration, and not only to the stylish women who zip around the city on their bikes, but also to the more seedy underbelly of gang life, where pieces like “cholo” shorts with foldable waistbands and prints inspired by Japanese yakuza tattoos (combined with a bit of art nouveau) lent a tougher edge to the otherwise prim lady-like looks.
