2017 is the Year of Bizarre Jeans

Something unusual is bubbling in the world of denim for 2017. If you’ve been keeping your eye on the fashion press, you might have spotted the wave of frisky jeanswear styles that are popping up this summer. Kendall Jenner had the fashion industry up in arms when she stepped out in her Janklets aka Jorts earlier this year, while at Coachella, Rihanna stunned fans when she arrived at Kendrick Lamar’s set wearing a Matthew Adams Dolan off-the-shoulder jacket and floor-grazing slit pants and Ryan Destiny turned heads with her one-leg jeans.

Avant-garde denim is nothing new though, you only have to look back to the early naughties to see some of the weird and wonderful fashion moments in denim history. A quick google will pull up some of the worst offenders with names like Paris Hilton, Justin and Britanny and Pink all committing gloriously bad crimes against fashion.

Back to today and you’ll find a number of labels tapping onto the risqué-chic looks of the naughties. Brand-of-the-moment Vetements is feeding the appetite for frisky denim with the release of their deliciously rude pair of jeans as part of its Spring 2017 Vetements x Levi’s collaboration with a visible zipper fly that left little to the imagination. It goes a full 360 degrees from front to butt, adding a perverted twist to your regular blues. Vetements isn’t the only label jumping onto the risqué-chic look: Parisian brand Y/PROJECT toyed with wonderfully left-of-center denim chaps, and Topshop caused controversy with their clear plastic jeans, and even 90s label JNCO have been working their way back into our cultural consciousness since 2015, with Balenciaga releasing their upscale version back in January.

So why the weird denim now? It seems like every few weeks in 2017 brings a new style that immediately goes viral due to its sheer ridiculousness and capacity to anger the masses. Whichever you choose, an out-of-the-ordinary approach to denim is a sure way to add bite to your warm-weather wardrobe. Here are 5 quick ways to get the look.
