Over the weekend, the Active Team was glued to our screens watching the 2011 Wimbledon tournament. Considering tennis is one of our favorite sports to both participate in, and observe as a spectator, it was quite a sight, to say the least, to see Serbian Novak Djokovic, take down the number one player, Rafa Nadal, in the final match on Sunday.
The results of 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3, led Djokovic to win his first ever Wimbledon tournament and his second Grand Slam this year taking the 2011 Australian Open title earlier in January.
Djokovic’s win only brings more attention to him and his apparel sponsor, Sergio Tacchini. The iconic Italian brand has been a go-to for top tennis stars through the years, including Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras and Martina Navratilova. (We’re sure Sergio Tacchini will garner more attention in the future and a bit of resurgence for tennis enthusiasts.) Granted, for Wimbledon, the rules allow for only “tennis whites”, it was still interesting to see what Djokovic was sporting and the finer points of his look which included a tailored polo with light blue piping along the athlete’s collar and shorts.
Nike, is Nadal’s premiere sponsor along with many other top tier athletes in tennis, so it’s always exciting to see what the brand unleashes for its players during tournament time, and then, of course, to watch how the looks translate to retail. Rafa’s cool blue accents paired well, like Djokovic, with Wimbledon’s “all whites” rule, and kept the star sharp on the court. Sophisticated details like his ¡Vamos Rafa! bull embedded into Nike Dri-FIT fabric only cement that the brand takes pride in the utmost specifics for the Spaniard’s kit.
Look for our upcoming Tennis Trend Tracker, on women’s looks through the years, set to go live later this week, which includes highlights from Wimbledon on the ladies ensembles. Come late August, through September, we can’t wait until the US Open of Tennis kicks off in New York City. Stay tuned for full coverage in the forthcoming months! – Jessica McMenamin
