WGSN takes to the streets of Milan during Fashion Week autumn/winter 2009/10 to bring you the most stylish ladies in town.
In this first instalment from Milan we focus on coats and jackets, where fur and leather continue to be the most dominant fabrications on the street.
Belted jackets
- All styles of coats can be updated when belted-in
- Darker tones are most popular on the streets of Milan

Knit outerwear
- Oversized cardigans work well as a spring cover-up

- Seen predominantly on longer-length coats
Coccon
- Oversized coccon jackets looked directional
- Classic shades of grey, camel and black
Military
- Military details are still out in force on the Milan streets
- Looking fresh when applied to bright red and blue coats
- Big, brassy buttons emphasise the style
Capelet
- The mini-cape made a small but poignant appearance on the streets
- A great alternative to the longer lengths
- Looking sophisticated in single-breasted styles
Fur
- Fur has been the most popular outerwear on the streets this fashion week season
- Milan follows suit with an abundance of fur in all shades and colours
- The most directional shapes are the capelet and mini-bomber jacket
Tailored jackets
- Tailored jackets are starting to infilitrate the streets of Milan
- Mostly seen in black, the style offers a smart alternative to spring outerwear
- Worn with tight jeans and layered with evening dresses
Leather jackets
- The mini leather jacket continues to reign among the fashion cognoscenti
- Motorcycle details on supple black leather are still key
- Blazer reinterpretations look great in leather
Longer-length
- Below-the-knee coats look mature in tweeds
- Floor-sweeping-lengths make a dramatic silhouette
- Add military details to update the longer length
Arm details
- Unusual armhole details bring an interesting edge to jackets
- Various styles take on a cape structure with strategic arm hole placements
Red riding
- Bright red adds a touch of glamour to coats and jackets
- A welcome bright in the sea of dark tones on the street
- Siren red is the most popular shade
Cropped
- Shorter-length jackets create opportunity for layering effects
- Makes for an interesting effect when double-breasted woollen coats are cropped to waist length
- Bright jewel colours work well on this style
Shoulder emphasis
- Exagerated shoulder lines
- An avant-garde update to blazers and leather jackets
Polka dot
- Making a subtle appearance on the Milan streets
- Polka dot prints give a fun, optimistic feel to coats
- The spotty print works well in oversized or minuscule styles
