As part of London Design Festival, which commences this week across the capital, our favorite multidisciplinary architecture and design practice The Decorators are transforming an area at the Design Junction space with a temporary “adult” cinema.

Built by hand, in a similar vein to their Ridley’s temporary dining project last autumn, the cinema will take inspiration from the decadent and elaborate interiors of the 1930s, cinema’s “golden age”.  Putting the excitement back into cinema-going, The Decorators will also serve popcorn on old-fashioned, flip-down seating, and decorate the theater with beautiful, hand-painted signage.

As well as a fine selection of adult film, including Married to the Eiffel Tower (2008), Body Double (1984) and The Draughtman’s Contract (1982), the cinema space will additionally host seminars and talks throughout the festival period (a comprehensive schedule can be found here), courtesy of Blueprint Magazine.

“Adult Architecture” is a spatial and programmatic exaggeration of negotiations between body and space in film. The cinema is a walk-through structure of latex curtain, inside which architectural films display a fetishization of the human body. The design aesthetic borrows the language of the adult cinemas found on the dark streets and corners of the city,” explains architect Mariana Pestana.
