An interactive light installation in Hoxton Square, East London is humoring the British obsession with checking the weather forecast this summer.

Designed by creative studio Troika, The Weather Yesterday sculpture is made up of LED lights that display the previous day’s forecast.  Bold icons and a numerical temperature display depict the weather as it was exactly 24 hours ago, such as bright sunshine, clouds or the all to familiar heavy rain.  This enables passers by to compare and gauge the forecasts of each day in real-time, without referring to their smartphone or Internet-enabled device.

Troika explains further:

The Weather Yesterday takes our obsession with progress and absurdum by sardonically changing our focus from “forecast” to the “past”. The five meter-high sculpture celebrates the weather as a predominant topic of discussion in British culture, while offering a spin on the urgency with which we are using our mobile devices, forecasting and interactive technology.

While our digital devices have become incredibly efficient tools in helping us navigate our urban environments, this project proposes a more natural and poetic approach to telling the weather and temperature of the city.  We explore similar ideas in our In The Air report, Digital Downtime.

The Weather Yesterday was installed as part of the London Festival of Architecture earlier this month, and will remain in Shoreditch’s infamous square until September 9th. – Samantha Fox

Absolutely love the concept behind this piece. Experienced it first hand yesterday, in the rain, which you’ll be able to experience today!
