Vintage Street Scene: Fur Stoles

Having shed (temporarily?) their post-millennial PETA stamp of disapproval, fur collars and stoles are out of their politically-incorrect cave and re-emerging on streets around the world, as witnessed most recently during the F/W 12 runway season.  Once an ultra-luxe accessory to sumptuous evening looks or on smart tailored coats and dresses from the 30s-50s, fur trimmings were largely relegated to the category of ‘grandma style’ for the latter half of the 20th century.  Blame it on Berenice Bejo, the fur-stole-wearing star alongside Oscar winner Jean Dujardin in the 20s-inspired 2011 film The Artist, or chalk it up to the recent resurgence in furs on the runway; either way fur accessories are back in a major way.  The fur stole has returned as an almost subversive accent to contemporary looks, layered on top of denim jackets or blazers in real and faux versions, sometimes dyed à la Prada or left natural.  Below, a series of our favorite fur collars and stoles captured on recent streets by Stylesight’s excellent team of global correspondents.
