Video Vintage at the Centre Pompidou

‘Video Vintage’ explores the history and development of video in the context of contemporary art at Paris’ Centre Pompidou.

Video Vintage,’ a new exhibit at Paris’ Centre Pompidou, traces the history and development of video in the context of contemporary art through fundamental archival pieces in the museum’s collection from 1963 – 1983.  Since its origins in the early 60s, video has touched upon all modern aesthetic movements, ranging from the performance group Fluxus to minimalism to its current status as an unparalleled medium for cultural studies.  Video Vintage thus functions as an exploration of video art during the first two decades of conceptualism, with early video stars like Bruce Nauman and Marina Abramovic featuring prominently in a mix that also includes footage by none other than Jean-Luc Godard or Nam June Paik.  With the exhibit set up like a living room circa 1968, replete with period-specific vintage television sets, shag carpeting and all manner of kitschy seating options, this selection of videos invites viewers to sit down, relax, and take in some footage of William Wegman lip-synching to the soundtrack of a growling lion, or countercultural ‘collages’ by the likes of Ant Farm.

Vidéo Vintage: 1963 – 1983, Centre Pompidou, Open Monday, Wednesday – Sunday 11am – 9pm.  Through 7 May 2012.
