Travel Futures: Neighborhoods by Airbnb

The much-loved community travel service, Airbnb has just launched a new, in depth feature to provide users with a more personal, hyper-local, and unique travel experience.

The Neighborhood service, so far, comprises a series of concise travels guides for cities including New York, London, Berlin, and Rio de Janeiro. The guides enable travelers to explore and stay in diverse parts of a city that they might not otherwise experience when staying in a central hotel location or using a standard travel guide. It is ideal for those seeking a unique, more local and less tourist-driven travel experience.

Once a destination has been chosen, users are presented with a handful of searchable filters attributed to each city, such as “artsy”, “peace and quiet”, or “stunning views”, enabling them to pinpoint an area that suits their travel requirements. Keyword tags, including “hipsters”, “dive bars”, and “thrift shops”, will give the user an idea of the local area and its residents. The site itself is visually heavy, featuring locally captured photographs alongside maps, “local recommendations”, and information.

Consumers are increasingly seeking authentic and personalized travel experiences that enable them to connect with local residents and the local culture. See our recent RoadTrippers post for another example of curated travel. – Samantha Fox
