UPSCALE ATHLETIC
New York: Former Adidas and RLX designer Tim Coppens debuted his first major runway collection last night for F/W 13. He derived inspiration from his childhood — skateboard gear, graffiti escapades, and tailored hand-me-downs from his father. The collection featured sophisticated sportswear centered around technically complex athletic street classics that looked refined with classic tailoring and luxe materials, yet futuristic with metallic fabrics, patent leather paneling, structured quilting, and voluminous silhouettes. Graffiti-inspired black and white prints looked abstract and Pollock-esque on parkas, baggy trousers and button-fronts, giving pieces contemporary street appeal. Tuxedo striped pants looked athletic with white taping that alluded to classic Adidas striped windbreaker trousers; the item perfectly encapsulated the streetwear-meets-sophistication aesthetic presented throughout the collection. Inky blue, oxblood, charcoal, metallics, jet black, and bright white looked clean and right on the refined techno-tailored collection. Coppens proved that although he’s a newcomer, he is more than capable of being a major influencer in the American Men’s sportswear design realm. —Kathleen Tso
