Spijkers en Spijkers

Spijkers en Spijkers S/S 2013

London: The work of Sonia Delauney, the artist and designer whose heyday was during the 1920s, was the inspiration behind the latest Spijkers en Spijkers collection. The chevron stripes and color blocking that characterized Delauney’s work were used for sheaths, pencil skirts and tops. The Spijkers sisters even included a dreamy portrait of Delauney that contrasted with the clean, graphic designs. There were a few too many V-neck dresses with ruched waists and pencil skirts, which were only differentiated by color and print. The designers could have pushed it a bit further, but appropriating the compelling designs of Delauney was a wise move. –Joanna Manganaro
