Kimberly Ovitz

New York: Heavily wrapped, layered and draped, Kimberly Ovitz’s latest is inspired by Almagul Menlibayeva, a Kazakhstani performance artist whose work the designer translated into a raw collection of lean dresses and flowing shibori silk separates. Although the looks were roughly deconstructed, Ovitz worked a halter and strap detail throughout her presentation, and sheath dresses as well as asymmetric gowns were quite literally hanging by a thread. Such sharply graphic lines extended into outerwear too, and square-shouldered jackets gave shape to more ephemeral macramé tanks and mesh t-shirts printed with ghostly abstract crystals. A soft departure from her often tough and gothic aesthetic, S/S 13 proved Ovitz can also find strength in the relaxed and feminine.—Nina Stotler
