Herve Leger S/S 2013

New York: Body-con bandage dresses are the name of the game at Hervé Léger, and the spring collection was packed with them. What set this season’s offering apart from previous collections were unexpected inspirations and great attention to detail. The unique quilts made by the women of Gee’s Bend, Alabama provided the idea behind the graphic motifs seen on the opening passage of looks. But designer Lubov Azria removed any homespun or rustic qualities associated with quilting and crafts; these dresses were slick and club-ready. Shiny leather harnesses and kidney belts made them even more seductive. As the show went on, the looks became increasing complicated. First, there were pixilated patterns, then elaborate lacing and weaving appeared. The final dress was an intricate number, almost baroque in its excess of details, but a soft palette of blush and ivory helped to subdue the opulence. –Joanna Manganaro
