Gabriele Colangelo Pre-Fall 2013

FUR REAL
New York: As the descendant of a family of furriers, it’s no surprise that Gabriele Colangelo consistently puts out some of the most exciting furs on the market. His Pre-Fall collection was no exception. This season, the designer used black cross mink, ultra-flat astrakhan, and beaver in new ways. Laser cutting techniques were used to make the pelts lighter in weight, and fur was also knit into sweaters. Some of the most impressive pieces started as a knit and ended in astrakhan. Tones changed as the materials blended together, making for an ombré effect. Colangelo also employed hand-painted snakeskin for a range of chic separates, characterized by their clean lines and precise cuts. With such an emphasis on materials, it would’ve been easy to lose sight of design, but Colangelo managed to balance the two elements beautifully. He wisely stuck to simple shapes in on-trend proportions. –Joanna Manganaro
