Etro S/S 2013

ORIENT EXPRESS
Milan: A visit to the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid unexpectedly gave Victoria Etro the inspiration for her spring collection. The Orientalist paintings she encountered there provided fodder for this season’s colorful prints. Etro isn’t the only one to have looked east for inspiration; just yesterday, Miuccia Prada also presented a show full of Japanese references. Could this be an emerging theme for spring? Etro’s take on the Orient was more literal than Prada’s Mod-influenced version. Many of the jackets, tops, and dresses were based on kimonos. The flora and fauna in the prints were rendered in vibrant tones of lime, cerulean, and magenta, giving looks a feeling of optimism and excitement. –Joanna Manganaro
