If you’re in NYC for the madness magic of Fashion Week and need to escape/shove comfort food in your face, head to Brooklyn’s Battersby. This tiny restaurant is nestled on Smith Street in the twee neighborhood of Carroll Gardens, an unassuming spot that you might just pass by, if not for the crowd milling about outside, waiting for one of their 28 coveted seats to open up. Of those 28 seats, 10 are at the bar, where you’ll find a lovely wine list curated by Erika DaSilva (Otto, Momofuku Ssam Bar & Ma Peche), as well as beautifully crafted cocktails. Battersby is a labor of love, the food baby of two bros who graduated from the Culinary Institute of America together in 2002, then spent time apart cooking in some of the world’s most prestigious kitchens. Chef/owner Walker Stern worked at La Folie, the Essex House, the Ritz Carlton, The Vanderbilt, Blue Hill, and 81, while chef/owner Joseph Ogrodnek also did time at the Essex House, as well as Anella, Gramercy Tavern, Union Square Cafe, and Tabla. Sous Chef Mike Sowa is a veteran of The Spotted Pig, The Vanderbilt and 81.

Named after Philadelphia’s Battersby Street, where Chef Joe grew up, and opened last year to little fanfare, Battersby has slowly become one of those must-visit places.  Bon Appetite named their Kale Salad the 2012 Dish of the Year, listing Battersby at Number 3 on their Hot Ten list of America’s Best New Restaurants. Full of farm-to-table goodness, the menu changes every three days or so, but each meal always starts with a basket of rosemary bread (baked in house) accompanied by a side of whipped ricotta. SO VERY COMFORTING.  If you’re coming from NYFW and want a guaranteed seat, reservations are only available if you choose the ‘spontaneous’ tasting menu, so go ahead and do that. TREAT. YO. SELF.    xx Ashley Churchill
