SCHOLARLY WOODSMEN
New York: A full house turned out for Michael Bastian’s F/W 13 show last night in a dark industrial space — a fitting venue for the army of laid-back outdoorsy looks that showed down the runway. Bastian continued his knack for rugged tailored menswear in this most recent collection, as well as charming intarsia animal themed knits with Redwing Blackbird and Wolves graphics that mirrored the coveted Bulldog sweater from F/W 12. This season, there was a heavy hunting inspiration with safety orange jackets and vests, olive trousers and beanies, lace-up hunting boots, suede moccasins, and fur tail keychains attached to pants, alluding to hunting victories. The woodsy inspiration mixed in with a tailored, 1970s professor style with red and grey Glen plaid suits, intarsia Fair Isle sweaters styled under velvet dinner jackets, suspenders, knit ties, and wireframe round glasses. Elements of flannels tied around the waist, wide-brimmed felt fedoras, chunky knit arm warmers and balaclavas, and chopped chinos gave the collection the inimitable edge that Michael Bastian achieves season after season. —Kathleen Tso
