MID-CENTURY RAVE
New York: For little brother label Marc by Marc’s S/S 2013 collection, Marc Jacobs filtered multiple of-the-moment aesthetics — “mid-century country club,” “suburban raver,” “luxe leisure” — through his quirky-cool commercial lens, resulting in mash-ups that felt both fresh and timelessly Marc. Skulls and music notes put a contemporary spin on 50s-inspired checkerboard motifs that decorated button-fronts, jailbird stripes lent direction to simple separates and painterly lines updated gingham checks. Proportions also looked right, with schoolboy blazers and short, boxy button-fronts topping rolled-up trousers (both slim and voluminous wide-legged cargo styles) and big pullovers contributed a laid-back element. Festival favorite accessories, like backpacks, caps and dandy footwear, completed each look. —Whitney Kessler
