Following its astonishing 2011 début at Paris’ Musée Bourdelle, Galliera curator Olivier Saillard’s beautifully executed exhibition on the esteemed reine de draping, Madame Grès, has moved to Antwerp’s MoMu fashion museum through February 2, 2013.  Madame Grès: Sculptural Fashion attempts to re-create the wildly successful pairing of Grès’ work with that of a sculptor; in this case, the living Belgian artist Renato Nicolodi sits in for the late Antoine Bourdelle, whose massive studio and larger-than-life (though hardly transportable) ouevre served as the Parisian backdrop for Saillard’s groundbreaking exhibition for the Musée Galliera’s ongoing Hors les Murs series.  Nicolodi created installation pieces and contributed to the set design of the exhibit with a series of austere sculptures that continue his exploration of “…such man-made structures as the Pyramids, bunkers, or disused urban architecture, from Antiquity for example, which have lost their original function to become sculpture instead.”

MoMu’s version of the show also juxtaposes Grès’ work with contemporary pieces loaned by designers that were directly inspired by her oeuvre (Haider Ackermann, for one), an interesting dimension that is sure to differentiate and build upon the original Paris show.

So if you missed it the first time, be sure to swing through Antwerp to catch this breathtaking collection of masterpieces by one of fashions’s most important 20th century masters.  Click here to watch a video interview with Sculptor Renato Nicolodi on his work and set examples created for the show.
