Innovation & Technology: Virtual Sunset at the V&A

Virtual Sunset is an interactive and ever-evolving, exhibition by Studio Tobias Klein, recently installed in the Grand Entrance of the V&A Museum in London.


The Victoria and Albert Museum in London recently played host to an interactive and ever-evolving, installation by Studio Tobias Klein.

The traveling exhibition, entitled Virtual Sunset, comprises images that have been submitted and uploaded by members of the public across the world: a project website,  enables them to be geotagged with their location.  During the V&A residence, these images were projected in real-time onto hundreds of strands of PVC tubing, transforming the museum’s Grand Entrance into a live sunset and an immersive environment.

“The sunset is dependent on how people engage with the project”, explained Tobias Klein in a recent video interview with The Creators Project.

“I think it is important that there is a strong relationship between the physical environment and a digital environment, and how we (as humans) can start to position ourselves within them.”

You can see more from the project here, which is due to make its next stop at the Industry Gallery in Washington, DC in October this year.  Virtual Sunset will run for a further 3 years. – Samantha Fox
