We heard today via Unionmade that there will be a very special event and exhibition in San Francisco tomorrow that is worth attending if you live in the city and love your indigo!

The “Japan Blue” exhibit revolves around indigo master craftsman, Yasuo Nakajima, who is the forth generation indigo dyeing master of the Bushu Nakajima Konya, a family-owned dyeing studio established in 1837, over 175 years ago! Freshness reported that Nakajima was designated by the Saitama Prefecture as “a holder of intangible culture treasure and technology in indigo dyeing.” He has served as an Artist in Residence for the Textiles Program of the California College of the Arts, and continues to produce artwork while training apprentices.

He has also made great contributions to creating replicas of clothing and ornaments that were excavated from the tomb of Tutankhamen, an ancient Egyptian pharaoh, with his expertise in indigo.

The exhibit will include ten works, including tapestry and a kimono. It opens tomorrow June 19th and runs through August 3rd, with an opening reception on June 19th from 6 – 7:50 pm, featuring a presentation by the master himself. Admission is free.
