New York: With all of the fanfare surrounding the upcoming film adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, darker themes have a secure place in popular culture, including gritty urban fashion of the kind worn by the movie’s protagonist. Nicole and Michael Colovos of Helmut Lang are no strangers to this direction, but consistently succeed at updating their black-on-black formula with new techniques to keep their customers interested. For Pre-Fall, they infused their collection with swirling, spiderweb prints and burnouts; delicate angular motifs enhanced draped silk tunic dresses as well as skinny jeans. Leather figured prominently as always, appearing in the form of a padded shoulder carapace attached to a tunic and via a number of strong-shouldered modern motorcycle jackets. The mood wasn’t all black, white and grey either; a fresh lime green brought the update full circle.—Nina Stotler
