Austrian-born photographer Ernst Haas, an early master of color photography, is the subject of an exhibition in Zurich celebrating the recently-published Color Correction (Steidl, 2011), a series of heretofore unseen works that were hidden in plain view amongst his vast archives.  Celebrated in his time for more commercial & journalistic photography, Haas’ photo essays on New York, Paris, and more featured prominently in magazines like LIFE, establishing a foothold in the industry that would overshadow his more personal work.  Haas’ personal work– sumptuous, layered compositions saturated in color and shifting reflections– reveals an attention to detail and commitment to an ever-shifting point of view.  Full of reflected surfaces, Haas’ images imbue the subject with a hazy depth; conjuring a fleeting mood rather than a moment in time.
