Quality is the leitmotif at Karl-Heinz Müller’s second 14. oz denim store, recently opened in the western part of Berlin.  A long-time denim devotee (the first edition of Bread & Butter, in Cologne in 2001, was denim-focused), Müller opened his inaugural 14 oz. store when B&B returned to Berlin in 2009.  November 2012 saw the unveiling of a second Berlin outpost at Haus Cumberland, located on Berlin’s signature shopping boulevard Kurfürstendamm in the eastern part of the city.  A renewed interest in this one-time sleepy street makes it a prime location for Müller’s new 14 oz. store, a mecca for premium denim and streetwear brands.

Home of 14 oz, the land-marked building Haus Cumberland was originally constructed as a luxury apartment complex by architect Robert Leibnitz in 1911-12.  S1 Architektur and Luis Mock restored the building whilst still respecting its historic details; incorporating shelves still intact from a former library and antique steel and wood elements, fitted accurately into the store.  A mix of antique and modern furniture contribute to a sense of timelessness, a feeling that is reinforced by 18th century chandelier lighting fixtures from Britain and antique tin ceilings from America.  Photos by F.C. Gundlach line the walls, hung by the artist himself.  Müller attached great importance to artisanal execution for the store interior as well as the merchandise.

14 oz. Haus Cumberland caters to well-informed denim lovers with deep pockets, seeking out brands that combine style, quality and authenticity. Hand-manufactured products from traditional factories are chosen with a focus on ethical suppliers. Müller’s declared goal to be Berlin’s first address for first-class denim, street and urban wear has been duly met: 14 oz. counts 3×1 By Scott Morrison
, Atelier la durance, Denham the jeanmaker, 45RPM, Woolrich, Nudie Jeans, PRPS, Current Elliott, Johnbull, Splendid, Barbour, Hunter, Ben Adler and Himalaya Cashmere amongst its wares. -Kelly Miller
