Inspiration | Dazed & Confused, June 2012

Dazed & Confused‘s June issue features an editorial inspired by the works of fashion illustrator Rene Gruau. Models Ava Smith, Codie Young and Madison Headrick are made to look like rough sketches by makeup artist Yadim.

Gruau (Feb 1989 – March 2004) was one of the best known artists in the haute couture world during the 1940s and 50s. He was a favorite of designers like Pierre Balmain, Christian Dior, Balenciaga, Elsa Schiaparelli, Rochas, Lanvin and Hubert de Givenchy. Famous for his fashion illustration from the age of 14, by 18, Gruau had been published all over the world from Marie-Claire, Femina, Elle, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Flair, L’Officiel, etc. He was best known for the illustrations in the Miss Dior perfume and for Rouge Baiser lipstick while he was artistic director for advertising at Dior. Together, the two formed the “New Look” of the time.
