Antonio Lopez: Fashion, Art, Sex, & Disco by Roger Padhila and Mauricio Padilha, published by Rizzoli.

As Anna Sui puts it in the epilogue, “I’m from the generation that came to New York to meet their idols.  For me, that was Andy Warhol and Antonio Lopez.” Born in Puerto Rico, Lopez moved to New York with his family at the age of 7, attended the city’s High School of Art & Design and later F.I.T. before leaving his studies behind to embark on a career that would see his illustrations grace the pages of the world’s most influential fashion and news publications, from Women’s Wear Daily to Vogue, The New York Times, and Andy Warhol’s Interview.  This prolific oeuvre is now the subject of a new monograph published by Rizzoi, “Antonio Lopez: Fashion, Art, Sex & Disco” available as of September 4th, 2012.  Countless polaroids and photographs of models, friends, and industry icons- like the late Anna Piaggi- accompany the exhaustive selection of illustrations, acting as a sort of ‘Who’s Who’ or yearbook of fashion throughout the 60s, 70s, and 80s and a compelling portrait of the Disco zeitgeist on both sides of the Atlantic (Lopez lived in Paris from 1969-mid 70s before returning to NYC to tear up the dance floors of many a club and light up the design world.)  He may have died young of complications from AIDS in 1987, but his work continues to influence generations of designers and creative types.

For those in New York City, the Suzanne Geiss Company gallery is hosting a parallel exhibition, “Antonio’s World,” from September 7th – October 20th 2012.  Unpublished illustrations, photographs and ephemera from his estate and that of his late partner, Juan Ramos will feature in the gallery’s space at 76 Grand Street on the Lower East Side.
