The North Face Standard: Tokyo

While in Tokyo, the Active Team is on a mission to hit our favorite stores. Usually we spend a few days wandering around the back streets in Jingumae and Harajuku in Shibuya going from Neighborhood to FTC, and from atmos and Kamo. We even make it a point to hit up Tokyo Hands (the most amazing department store in the city for everyday items like pens and stationary) and Opening Ceremony, to drool over the newest in young designer and footwear.

BUT, our absolute, #1 favorite store is The North Face Standard on Meiji Dori. Sandwiched between The North Face Mens and The North Face Womens store, stands a slender concrete building, comprised of 5 magnificent floors. Each floor, no bigger than small bedroom, houses some of the most conceptual TNF collaborative projects you could ever imagine. From Purple Label to Junya Wantanabe, the collections that you can’t get your hands on outside of Japan are all here waiting to be scooped up. Swoon.

While in town, we were lucky enough to catch an exhibit on the top floor called The Bandannas, which featured maps — printed on, you guessed it bandannas — of National Parks in North America ranging from Yosemite to the Grand Tetons. It was a simple, yet beautiful display, much like most of the art in Tokyo, attention to detail reigned supreme.- Jeanine Pesce
