Le Musée des Années 30 has recently unveiled an exhibition that traces the extraordinary yet fragile life and career of the Austrian-German cinema star, Romy Schneider.

Born in 1938, six months after the Anschluss in Nazi-era Vienna, as Rosemarie Magdalena Albach into an Austrian-German actor family, Romy Schneider started working at the early age of fifteen.  Her incredible career, which includes a now iconic role in Sissi, about the saga of the Austrian empress, along with her romance with actor Alain Delon, the suicide of her ex-husband and accidental death of her son, are all retraced in this fascinating exhibition. Built on a chronological basis, it gives visitors an in-depth look into the life and career of the actress, displaying numerous photographs, archived documents, original film posters and magazines, jewels, dresses, and private letters, along with firsthand accounts and memories from her collaborating directors, partners and fans.

“Rarely has an actress has been so so beautiful and touched as many people as she did”, says Jean-Pierre Lavoignat, curator of the exhibition. “Rarely has such a young and famous actress has been able to achieve such an incredible career, whereas she was always trying to escape her own legend. Rarely has a star has been at the same time so blessed by god and yet hit by destiny. Rarely has a woman has been so bright and yet tortured. Rarely has a foreigner portrayed France as she did.”
